Modern lamps usually have clean lines and little or very subtle adornment - a case where "less is more." A modern lamp may use materials in a new way or use materials not typically associated with lamps. You may see a new industrial materials or finishes show up in a modern design. They may present a new way of thinking about what home lamps should look like and function. Modern lamps push the design envelope - and one may experience the "shock of the new".
Teenagers are always fond of a clear lamp, as they can boldly decorate the shade with their school colors, or any color scheme they may wish. Small children love a clear table lamp that has whimsical animals imbedded within the lamp itself, or some kids really like to see seashells being housed within a lamp. A clear table lamp need not be a straight piece of glass enclosing the electric cord either, there are bubbles of glass, and there are tapered glass table lamps to be had also.
When looking at antique lamps remember to not clean them up so much. This is especially true with the brass and sterling lamps. Cleaning them too much devaluates them considerably. On the popular series Antiques Road Show I am always amazed at the person with the 100 year old piece of brass that would have sold for $5,000 but one can of Brass-o later is worth about a buck fifty.
You can have a clear glass table lamp in the shape of an urn or perhaps a modern one that is shaped like a geometrical pattern such as a pyramid, for example. So many table lamps and we have not even gotten to colored glass yet!
