When looking at antique lamps remember to not clean them up so much. This is especially true with the brass and sterling lamps. Cleaning them too much devaluates them considerably. On the popular series Antiques Road Show I am always amazed at the person with the 100 year old piece of brass that would have sold for $5,000 but one can of Brass-o later is worth about a buck fifty.
Each bedroom can have specific kind of bedside lamps so that the style and design matches with the personality of the person who lives in the room. For example, children's bedroom can have lamps that are flashy or even represent the cartoon characters. Children love lamps that they can turn on and off when going to sleep or when they wake up. If you put touch panel lamps in kids' bedroom, it lends a dash of excitement for the children.
Tiffany lamps are a classic. Everybody wants to own it but a very few can really afford to do so. The exclusivity of the lamps adds to its appeal. The very face that not every other person can buy it makes Tiffany lamp owners a cut above the rest. The status value and awe that the lamp brings makes it an instant hit and favorite amongst most upper middle class and higher class house wives. Tiffany lamps can add the right amount of glamour and class to an otherwise plainly set up room. The elegance they bring is unparalleled.
Modern lamps usually have clean lines and little or very subtle adornment - a case where "less is more." A modern lamp may use materials in a new way or use materials not typically associated with lamps. You may see a new industrial materials or finishes show up in a modern design. They may present a new way of thinking about what home lamps should look like and function. Modern lamps push the design envelope - and one may experience the "shock of the new".
