Outdoor lighting in your home is installed primarily for security purposes, but can also be selected and placed to add some mood or highlight the design of your home. Lights in the exterior areas of a home, such as backyards, front lawns and patios, can make the simplest of houses to the most charming abode in the neighborhood.
The effects of outdoor lighting can not be over stated. Done well outdoor lighting can be enchanting. The first time I appreciated the powerful effects of outdoor lighting and outdoor art was in a lovely patio restaurant in Mexico. I was simply enchanted and have been so ever since. Since that night I admire outdoor lighting everywhere I go.
We should pay serious attention to the types of lamps we are installing in our outdoor space. Whether the lamp is for our front yard or our back yard, it has to be up to standard because this can make or break the beauty of your outdoor space. Making the right choice is also imperative when it comes to promoting security at home. Your home will become less of a target for prowling burglars if your outdoor space is well-lit as this shows passers-by that the space is extensively used.
The first thing you need to consider when developing an outdoor lighting scheme is safety. The pathways and the doorways need to be properly illuminated in order to prevent any unexpected stumbles. Properly lit entrance ways including any back alleys that might border your property also increase your level of personal safety. A good rule of thumb is to have at least 60-80 watts of light at every outside door, set of outside steps, or any other place that you might want to go to at night ie alleys or garbage bin areas.
