One of the places in your house that constantly need security lighting is the garage. Make sure this area is amply covered with lighting at night. For a small garage, a single light at the center of the entrance would suffice. But for a 2-car garage or bigger areas, you should install some more. The sides of your house also need proper illumination for a similar purpose. In addition, sensors in your lighting system in these areas are a good idea if you'd like to save energy. These sensors automatically activate your lighting system when programmed according to time or when motion is detected.
There are several types of lamps available for use in low wattage outdoor lighting kits. LED, incandescent, low voltage fluorescent and halogen lamps all provide soft, non-glaring light. Halogen bulbs offer excellent color rendering, are highly efficient and typically last about 4000 hours. Low voltage fluorescent bulbs use little energy and are a good choice if the lights will be on for more than 4 hours at a time.
